Rows of desks shows a grid with “Front of the room” at the top. Use it for a classroom, a lecture, a bus or any room where everyone faces the front. Extra seats show as Empty.
Tables or groups splits the names into tables of the size you choose. Use it for group work, a wedding, a dinner or a workshop. The last table may have fewer people if the number does not divide evenly. If you only need to split students into teams, the Team Generator is quicker.
Why Use a Random Seating Chart?
- Fair. Nobody can say the teacher picked favourites.
- Mixes the room. Students meet new classmates instead of sitting with the same friends.
- Helps focus. Random seats break up groups that talk too much.
- Saves time. A fresh chart takes seconds, so you can change it every week or month. For deciding a random turn order, try Who Goes First.
Keep Apart and Front Seats
Sometimes pure random is not enough. Two students may distract each other, or a student may need to sit near the board for vision, hearing or support. The tool handles both:
- Keep apart: pairs are never placed next to each other (side by side, or one directly in front of the other) in rows, or at the same table in table mode.
- Front row: the listed names are placed in the first row or rows, in random order among those seats.
If the rules cannot all be met, for example when there are too few seats, the tool tells you and shows the best chart it found.
Popular Questions
How often should I change the seating chart?
Every two to four weeks works well for most classes. It keeps the room fresh without confusing students.
Tips for classroom seating
- Print or copy the chart and put it on the board or the classroom door.
- If two students share a first name, add the first letter of the last name.
- Leave a few spare seats for new students.
- Explain the rule to the class: random seats, no swaps. It avoids arguments.
- Need to pick one student at random? Use the Random Name Picker.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the seating really random?
Yes. The tool uses your browser’s secure random number generator and the Fisher-Yates shuffle, so every seat arrangement that follows your rules has the same chance.
Can I keep two students apart?
Yes. Add a pair on its own line in the Keep apart box, like “Maya, Leo”. They will not sit side by side or one behind the other. In table mode they will not share a table.
How do I give a student a front seat?
Type the name in the Front row box. The tool places that student in the first row or rows.
What if I have more names than seats?
The tool shows a message with the number of names and seats. Add more rows or more desks per row.
Can I use it for a wedding or an event?
Yes. Choose Tables or groups, set the table size and add keep-apart pairs for guests who should not share a table.
Can I save the chart?
Tap Copy chart and paste it into a document, a spreadsheet or a message.
Is it free and is student data safe?
It is free and runs fully in your browser. Names are not sent anywhere. They are saved only on your own device so they are there next time. Clear the Names box when you are done.
