What Do the Dice Names Mean?

In dice notation, “d” stands for “die” and the number is how many sides it has. So d6 is a normal six-sided die, and d20 has twenty sides. A roll like 2d6+3 means: roll two six-sided dice, add them together and add 3.

Advantage and Disadvantage Explained

Advantage: you roll each die twice and keep the higher number. This is popular in tabletop role-playing games when a character has a helpful situation.

Disadvantage: you roll each die twice and keep the lower number, for when the situation is difficult.

When to Use an Online Dice Roller

  • Board games when you have lost the dice
  • Tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons style adventures
  • Math lessons and probability games in the classroom
  • Choosing who goes first, or picking a random number between 1 and 6, 20 or 100
  • Dice games with friends and family, even on a video call

Is This Dice Roller Fair?

Yes. Each die is decided by a secure random number from your browser, and every side has the same chance. Each roll is independent, so earlier rolls do not change the next one. For example, when you roll two six-sided dice, a total of 7 is the most common result because it can be made in more ways than any other total.
