Team Generator

Split any group into fair, random teams in one click. Paste a list of names, choose how many teams you want or how many people should be on each team, and the team generator does the rest. Teams are always as even as possible, a captain can be picked for each one, and you can give teams colors or animal names. It is free, needs no signup and works on phones, tablets and classroom screens.

How to Use the Team Generator

  1. Type or paste the names, one per line or separated by commas. Up to 200 names are supported.
  2. Choose Number of teams to set how many groups you need, or People per team to set the size of each group.
  3. Pick a naming style: Team 1, Team 2, colors or animals.
  4. Leave “Pick a random captain” ticked if each team needs a leader.
  5. Tap Generate Teams. Not happy? Tap Shuffle again for a completely new split, or Copy teams to paste the result into a chat or document.

Team Generator Features

  • Balanced teams: team sizes never differ by more than one person.
  • Two ways to split: by number of teams or by people per team.
  • Random captains marked with a star on each team.
  • Team names as numbers, colors or animals, each with its own color card.
  • Duplicate check: a name entered twice is only added once.
  • Your list is remembered on this device, so a class or club list is ready next time.
  • Copy and Share the full team list in one tap.

How the Teams Are Made Fair

The tool first shuffles the whole list using the secure random number generator in your browser, so every possible order is equally likely. It then deals the names out one at a time, like dealing cards, to Team 1, Team 2, Team 3 and back to Team 1. This is why teams are always even. With 11 people and 3 teams, you get teams of 4, 4 and 3, never 6, 3 and 2.

Because the split is random, nobody can choose their friends or be picked last. That makes it a simple way to avoid arguments, and it means a different mix of people works together each time you shuffle.

Number of Teams or People per Team?

Use Number of teams when you already know how many groups you need, for example four groups for four classroom tables, or two sides for a football match. Use People per team when the group size matters more, for example pairs for a project or teams of five for basketball. The tool works out the number of teams for you, and if the names do not divide evenly, some teams get one extra person.

Popular Ways to Use It

  • Classrooms: make random groups for projects, quizzes or lab work, and change them every week.
  • Sports and PE: split players into fair sides without choosing captains first.
  • Game nights: make teams for charades, Pictionary or trivia.
  • Work and training: form breakout groups for workshops or team-building activities.
  • Clubs and camps: rotate activity groups so everyone meets new people.

Tips for Better Teams

  • Keep your class or club list saved in the box. It stays on this device, so you only type it once.
  • If skill levels matter, run the generator a few times and pick the split that looks most balanced.
  • Use the captain as the team’s spokesperson, timekeeper or first player.
  • Pair this tool with the Coin Flip to decide which team goes first.
